Maria Carizma Torrez, R.T.

Maria Carizma Torrez was born in a small city, Santa Barbara, in the State of Chiuhauha, Mexico and was raised until her early twenties in Santa Barbara, California.  In 1985, she moved to Fresno and began to work for a local Hispanic Orthopeadic Surgeon as a receptionist where her ability to be bilingual was a plus. In 1988, she graduated from cosmetology school and worked in that profession for a while but returned to school to study radiology and graduated in 1996.  In March of 1990, Maria began working in the medical field.  In 1994, Maria heard about “Liga, the Flying Doctors of Mercy” at her work from an insurance adjuster that was a Liga volunteer. Maria soon began to volunteer as an interpreter and immediately fell in love with “the cause” and continues to volunteer at La Victoria in triage and as a surgery assistant and translator while also serving as the Clinic Coordinator, which is a time consuming process to coordinate the needs of clinic patients with the volunteers for each trip, and as past President for several terms.

The trips with Liga made a great change in Maria’s life where she found her true calling to help the less fortunate while also realizing how fortunate she and others are in the United States.   Each trip is a memorable experience that enriches her life. Maria plans to continue to serve Liga’s great cause and invites anyone who wants to help others, and in turn, that person will be paid with smiles and genuine gratitude
